How to use 3D printing to save money on braces (for teeth)

An enterprising undergraduate student, Amos Dudley, had tweeted online about his successful use of 3D printing to create clear plastic aligners for his teeth. From his blog, which he just posted on the 10th of March, 2016, there are photos of his smile before and after using the aligner for 16 weeks. The results were quite good.

From his blog:
So what does one need to do this themselves? Knowledge of orthodontic movement, a 3D scanner, a mold of the teeth, CAD software, a hi-res 3D printer, retainer material, and a vacuum forming machine. I realized, I had - or could acquire - all of these things.
